What is Citriodiol®?
Citriodiol® is Citrefine’s trade name for a repellent ingredient derived from lemon eucalyptus. Its technical name is “Eucalyptus citriodora oil, hydrated, cyclized”. It is not the same as ordinary eucalyptus essential oil.
How Citriodiol® is made
Citrefine processes oil from lemon eucalyptus leaves (Eucalyptus citriodora / Corymbia citriodora) through a controlled conversion. This increases the conversion of citronellal into PMD to produce the repellent ingredient. Citrefine supports its development, supply and technical quality control.
Citriodiol® in Zerobite Spray
Zerobite Spray contains 15% w/w Citriodiol®. The product contains neither alcohol nor DEET.
How are efficacy and safety assessed?
Citrefine supports the scientific dossier for Citriodiol® as part of its European biocidal assessment. Tests and risk assessments examine efficacy and effects on human health and the environment, with further studies requested where needed. This is a detailed, lengthy review process. Citrefine appears on ECHA’s Article 95 supplier list. Zerobite Spray obtained biocidal product authorisation in Türkiye following a similar assessment of the finished product’s efficacy and technical characteristics.
